Lore

The Cube is created

At the kickoff of the Chase for the Iii, the Horadrim realized they would need an antiquity of immense power.[ii] Such an artifact came in the class of a device simply called "the Cube." Designed past Zoltun Kulle[3] the Horadrim forged the Cube over a menses of weeks, as smiths hammered and mages chanted, feeling their sanity slipping all the while.[four] The Cube was completed, only was marred by the dark methods used to complete information technology and disastrous results.[iii]

For an extended menstruation of time,[2] the Horadrim used the Cube equally they hunted the Prime Evils.[iii] In fourth dimension, the Cube became the middle of Horadric works. Every initiative or activeness required it, and those who survived its creation became increasingly haunted by its presence.[4] Aware of the dangers of corruption,[two] and of the Cube's marred blueprint, the Order determined that it was too unsafe for anyone to go along using it.[3] That it had to be hidden from anyone, including them.[4] Of all the Horadrim, only Kulle objected to the abandonment of the device.[2] As such, they created the weaker Horadric Cube in its stead, and entrusted the first Cube to a secret organization of Barbarians on Mount Arreat, who kept information technology safe from anybody, including the residuum of their tribe. Throughout the years, these Barbarians served as guardians over the Cube, keeping information technology safe from prying eyes and those who would apply its powers for evil.[3]

The Cube below Sescheron

In 1265, the cube was guarded by the elder Kanai,[3] and was his most prized possession.[5] Information technology was buried below Sescheron. As the Army of Destruction overran the city, Kanai was killed. However, his spirit could not rest, due to the devastation of Mountain Arreat and the Worldstone. Doomed to stand eternal vigil over his home and greatest treasure, he awaited a powerful and honorable individual to whom he might pass on his task.[iii] Such an private came in the form of the Nephalem, every bit the hero(es) and the spirit of Zoltun Kulle were able to call up the artifact and unlock its power.[6]

In-game

Players may obtain the Cube if they survive through what remains of Sescheron and open up the ancient king's lost tomb. It is found in the Elder Sanctum, within The Ruins of Sescheron in Human action III on Take chances Mode only.

Cube close-up

The Cube itself functions much like an artisan once acquired, and will be available for utilise past all heroes on the account (finer existence a fourth artisan). It has several stiff abilities, including, merely not limited to:

  • Breaking down Legendary items for players to equip their special effects every bit passive traits.
  • Conversion of crafting materials from one type to some other.
  • Conversion of gems.
  • Opening portals to Treasure Realm and Not The Moo-cow Level.
  • Rerolling all affixes on a Legendary item (Reforging).
  • Conversion of Set items into other items of the same set.
  • Upgrading Rare items into Legendary items.
  • Removal of Character Level Requirements.

An important quality of life add-on (compared to the Horadric Cube interface) is that the Cube uses smart materials allocation: one may put more materials than needed into the Cube, the excess will simply be returned to inventory. There is no need to split materials into smaller packs with verbal numbers.

As of patch 2.v.0, Kanai's Cube also has a Fill up push, which automatically fills it with the required materials for the agile recipe.

Legendary Abilities: Archive of Tal Rasha

"...all agreed the Cube was necessary if the hunt for the 3 was to be successful. They thought they understood the dangers."

Fragment of the Dark Exile Scrolls(src)

Kanai's Cube can excerpt and store powers from nearly all Legendary and Set items with special (orange) secondary affixes. Characters can equip three such powers like passive abilities at a time.

See the separate article for full details.

Kanai4slots.jpg

During Season 22, Kanai's Cube received a 4th slot that can be filled with any power commonly allowed in the other three, just a indistinguishable power will not stack.

Required Materials:

  • Khanduran Rune
  • Caldeum Nightshade
  • Arreat War Tapestry
  • Corrupted Affections Flesh
  • Westmarch Holy H2o
  • Death's Jiff x5

Crafting Materials: Wrath, Regret and Pleasure of Iben Fahd

"However, none could deny the transcendent ability of the cube. With its might, the impossible seemed to be within their grasp..."

Fragment of the Dark Exile Scrolls(src)

"But one of their number came to realize the growing danger. A uncomplicated errand led him away from the others, and he experienced a moment of clarity that would change the fates of all."

Fragment of the Dark Exile Scrolls(src)

"He called the nine together, and declared that the cube must exist put away, hidden even from them. Perhaps from them most of all. 7 of the nine concurred, and so the cube was taken, nether cover of darkness, entrusted..."

Fragment of the Nighttime Exile Scrolls(src)

Divide into 3 recipes in-game for clarity and easier use. Allows converting 100 pieces of any not-Legendary salvaged crafting material into 100 pieces of another type of crafting material.

The resulting fabric matches the rarity of the particular used to perform the transmutation. Can just convert salvageable materials, so Expiry's Breath may not be received in issue.

Required Materials:

  • Decease's Breath
  • Whatsoever equippable Normal, Magic or Rare level 70 item

Gems: Darkness of Radament

"...in fourth dimension, the cube became the center of the Horadric works. Every initiative or action required it, and those who survived its creation became increasingly haunted by its presence."

Fragment of the Nighttime Exile Scrolls(src)

Allows converting exactly nine gems (obviously, not Legendary Gems) of the aforementioned color and same quality into 9 gems of that quality and another color (of player'south option).

Required Materials:

  • One Essence of the desired jewel type (sold past Squirt the Peddler for 500,000 gold each)
    • Essence of Amethyst
    • Essence of Diamond
    • Essence of Emerald
    • Essence of Ruby
    • Essence of Topaz

Reforge Legendary: Law of Kulle

"For weeks, the fires burned, the smiths hammered, and the mages chanted. Those who spent also long in the forge wandered, wide eyed and unblinking, in the daylight. They did not sleep."

Fragment of the Night Exile Scrolls(src)

This recipe allows characters to completely re-curl all affixes on any Legendary or Prepare item. The item is treated as if it just dropped anew: all Enchanting, dye, and Transmogrification modifications, as well equally sockets from Ramaladni's Gift, are removed.

Reforged items may re-roll equally Ancient, Primal, or non-Ancient items, regardless of the item's original quality. The bodily verbal chance to roll and Ancient or Primal Ancient item is unknown: different calculations show results between 1% and 10%.

Re-rolling keeps the same detail level, non updating the item to the electric current level of rerolling character. Yet, when re-rolling items, Smart Loot always kicks in, adjusting affixes to the class of the rerolling graphic symbol, if possible.

Note that because outdated items (buffed since the original drop) are technically dissimilar items with dissimilar in-game IDs, re-rolling an outdated particular volition NOT update its since-modified attributes and Legendary affixes.

Required Materials:

  • Forgotten Soul x50
  • Khanduran Rune x5
  • Caldeum Nightshade x5
  • Arreat War Tapestry x5
  • Corrupted Angel Flesh x5
  • Westmarch Holy H2o x5

Set Items Conversion: Skill of Nilfur

"...of the cave, ten Horadrim channeled powers, arcane and mystic. 10 felt their sanity slipping abroad. And nine averted their eyes as the cube came live."

Fragment of the Dark Exile Scrolls(src)

When used, replaces a Set piece with another random item of the same fix, every bit a fresh coil, nullifying all modifications. The new Set up item will never curl as an Aboriginal Particular, even if the former one was Aboriginal.

But set items belonging to sets of at to the lowest degree iii items may be converted.

Required Materials:

  • Forgotten Soul x10
  • Death's Breath x10

Upgrading Rare Items: Hope of Cain

"When the concrete material of the cube was forged, the real work began. 10 Horadrim took it deep into the cave, to a place that should never take been disturbed."

Dark Exile Scrolls(src)

Turns a level 70 Rare item into a random Legendary or Set detail of the same item blazon. The probability of rolling a specific detail for a given class varies with that item'due south normal driblet charge per unit. Thus it cannot award items from Horadric Caches. All modifications are lost, but any gems socketed are returned to inventory.

  • Smart Loot e'er applies.
  • Resulting item has a chance to be Ancient (10% risk of rolling Ancient) or Primal.
  • Can ringlet either Legendary or Fix items.
  • The Rare item used may be crafted, bought from a vendor, or looted.
  • Class-specific items and generic items that occupy the aforementioned slot arenon interchangeable. For example, a Magician cannot apply a Captain to scroll a Wizard Hat or vice versa.
  • May roll items exclusive to Torment difficulty.

Overall, it may exist an efficient fashion of farming specific Legendary items or missing set pieces, even more than effective than gambling from Kadala. It is especially useful when options for a form are limited — for example, there are simply so many class-specific items, so the chances of rolling the desired one are pretty high.

Required Materials:

  • Death'due south Jiff x25
  • Reusable Parts x50
  • Arcane Grit x50
  • Veiled Crystal x50

Character Level: Piece of work of Cathan

"...was done, and the scars would remain forever. And and then it was time for the final step, the i each of them had secretly hoped would not come up to pass."

Nighttime Exile Scrolls(src)

If rolled, sets Character Level requirement of that item to 1, without any other result. Cannot exist used on Legendary Gems, but can be used on items of whatsoever quality (including Gear up items). Does non occupy whatsoever affixes or sockets.

This recipe is of little use to regular characters, due to the fact that decease is not a permanent setback in that mode. On the other side of the coin, nonetheless, information technology can prove extremely helpful for any Hardcore graphic symbol, whether in a Season or not, so long as the player has a proficient set of equipment in their stash to fall back on in the event of a character's untimely decease.

Required Materials:

  • Jewel of Ease (rank 25 or higher)

Augmenting Ancient Items: Caldesann's Despair

"Some of them all the same felt the nighttime lust the cube has awoken in their hearts. They felt the absence of the cube keenly for rest of their days. Some fifty-fifty plotted to find information technology."

Dark Exile Scrolls(src)

This recipe can be practical to whatever Ancient (or Fundamental) particular, either Legendary or Fix. It will non work on regular Legendary or Set items.

When transmuted, information technology will upgrade the item past adding +5 to the cadre attribute of player's choice (come across below) for each rank of the Legendary Gem consumed in the procedure. While the recipe can be used multiple times on the same particular, it is not additive: the new bonus will overwrite the old one, fifty-fifty if the new bonus is lower.

The enhancement is applied every bit a split modifier, displayed below the other affixes; information technology is not affected by whatsoever other affixes an item may have. The core stat gained is determined past the color of the Flawless Royal gems consumed.

Required Materials:

  • A Legendary Gem of sufficient rank
    • For Weapons (including off-hand items): rank thirty or higher
    • For Jewelry: rank 40 or college
    • For Armor: rank 50 or higher
  • iii Flawless Royal gems—all of the same colour:
    • Ruby for Force,
    • Topaz for Intelligence,
    • Emerald for Dexterity, or
    • Amethyst for Vitality.

Trivia

This section contains facts and trivia relevant to this commodity.

  • Each of the Cube's transmutation recipes are named after Horadrim members: Tal Rasha, Radament, Zoltun Kulle, Jered Cain, Nilfur, Iben Fahd, Caldesann and Cathan.
  • Originally, the Radament's recipe was named after Nor Tiraj, a Horadrim acolyte who documented Baal's imprisonment.
  • The cube was named after Kevin Kanai Griffith, a Blizzard employee who succumbed to cancer.[3]
  • Exactly how long the Horadrim used the Cube differs. According to a post on boxing.internet, the Social club quickly determined that it was also dangerous to go on using soon after its creation.[3] According to Brian Kindregan however, the Horadrim used the Cube for a long time before abandoning it.[2] The second timeframe is supported past the Dark Exile Scrolls (which appear as flavour text for the Cube'due south functions), stating that it was used over a period of time long enough to get integral to the Horadrim'south deportment.
  • Pre-release items, namely the Nephalem Cube and Cauldron of Jordan, bear resemblance to Kanai's Cube.
